How we compare
Free OCR tools solve different jobs: quick phone capture, private browser extraction, desktop batch work, or multi-language documents. Accuracy depends on the image as much as the brand. Below is a fair look at three commonly used options plus where Photo2Text fits.
Photo2Text (browser, Tesseract.js)
Wins at: privacy (images stay on-device), no signup, English / Urdu / Arabic modes, zero install beyond a browser. Weaker at: ornate Nastaliq, handwriting, and huge PDF batches (PDF not in v1). Best when you want image to text without uploading.
Google Lens
Wins at: convenience on Android / iOS, strong everyday English scene text, instant “select text in camera” UX. Trade-offs: relies on Google’s ecosystem and cloud-assisted recognition; less ideal if you refuse to send screenshots of private chats or IDs to a third party. Excellent default for casual phone use when privacy is not the top constraint.
Microsoft OneNote / Office lens-style OCR
Wins at: users already in the Microsoft 365 world who want OCR inside notes and documents they already store there. Trade-offs: tied to accounts and cloud sync; overkill if you only need a one-off copy from a single PNG. Solid for productivity workflows, not for anonymous private extraction.
Desktop Tesseract (command line / local apps)
Wins at: power users who batch files, script pipelines, or keep everything offline after installing language packs. Trade-offs: setup friction for beginners. Photo2Text is essentially the same engine family with a friendlier web UI and CDN-fetched models on first extract.
Quick recommendation
